Get parklets on your streets!
We are calling for councils across the country to set up a simple process that lets any resident transform their street with a permanent community parklet.
Can you take action?
What are parklets?
A parklet is an old parking space that has been transformed into a space for people to enjoy. They are a great way to help re-imagine what our streets could be like with fewer cars clogging up the roads, and they have the power to help reduce the negative effects of motor vehicles on our local communities, improve air quality, and reduce CO2 emissions.
There’s no such thing as a typical parklet; they can take many forms. They are also great for bringing communities together, and providing some much -needed local green space.
What is the problem we need to solve?
Car-dominated lifestyles are increasingly creating challenges for our cities. We continue to lose public space to car parking, more cars means more emissions that worsens air pollution and the climate.
By reclaiming parking spaces, parklets provide an opportunity to reimagine how we use our streets and transition away from the harms of a car dominated city. From connecting communities, providing access to nature as well as providing a place for outdoor play and learning - parklets are part of a package of solutions to improve our cities and our climate.
What difference will emailing your councillor make?
Local residents, such as yourself, must be actively involved and engaged in the process of reclaiming and reimagining the streets you live in. Therefore, councils across the country must establish a simple process that lets residents create their own permanent community parklets.
You can take action by emailing your councillor to demonstrate how we can improve the streets we live in by converting parking spaces into parklets. You have the power to transform your street and start initiatives that challenge car dominance and can help tackle the climate crisis.
We want a parklet process where parking spaces can be transformed by local residents, for local residents.
If you want to reclaim your streets and create parklets, write to your local councillor with our template.
