Starting 2022 the right way - planting 3,500 trees in Hampshire

It’s been great getting the new year off to a flying start, with our first tree planting event at Dummer Down Farm in Hampshire being a massive success. We had over 100 enthusiastic volunteers join us in January to plant a staggering 3,500 more trees over a single weekend. We even managed to complete an additional 20 metres of hedgerow on top of the initial planting plan due to the hard work and determination of all the volunteers. A massive thank you to everyone who was involved!

This impressive achievement has resulted in a new 670m hedgerow being completed that will capture up to 500,000 tonnes of carbon across its lifetime. The creation of carbon sinks like this is crucial in the fight against climate change and our volunteers have shown what can be achieved in just a weekend. In addition, by using a mixture of native trees, and planting standard oak and cherry trees every 6 metres, an amazing habitat has been created that will help to improve biodiversity across the farm.

We’re hoping to return to Dummer Down farm next planting season to help fulfil the farmers plans to extend the hedgerow even further and create a wildlife corridor connecting these habitats to existing woodlands that border the farm.

Successful events like these are vital in the fight against climate change, but in addition to planting trees, the conversations we have with people while we do it are almost even more important. A desire to spend more time out in nature or wanting to take a break from the screen are just some of the reasons volunteers have come to join us. Even if it is just for the free lunch we would still love to have you come and help make a positive impact on the planet this year.
