New wind energy cooperative launches, becoming the first to supply its members wherever they are!
Most people in the UK want to generate their own renewable energy. But for many this simply isn’t possible, due to lack of access to a roof or suitable land.
Ripple Energy has launched a share offer to allow people to generate their own wind power, wherever they live.
How it works
People buy shares in the cooperative that will own the Graig Fatha wind turbine. Once all the shares in the wind farm have been bought, the turbine is built (near Coedely in South Wales). When it’s operational, the wind farm’s electricity is supplied to shareholders via the grid, and savings from their ownership are applied to their electricity bill, with Ripple managing the project.
This project doesn’t just allow people to buy their electricity from renewable sources they actually own, but also to support a project which increases the UK’s renewable energy capacity, allowing new onshore wind to be built without relying on government support. This can allow people to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by an average of 740kg each year.
The project also comes with a community benefit fund, so people living near the wind turbines will choose how and where funds provided by the turbine will be spent.
Onshore wind is the cheapest way to build new electricity capacity, but its rollout almost ground to a halt since the government stopped its support back in 2015. Ripple plans to harness people power to reverse this, by allowing more people to directly support clean energy.
