Wise up: resources we love for learning about climate change

stack of books

Getting clued up on climate change is one of the most powerful things you can do to be active in solving it. The less understanding we have, the harder it is to know what impacts to expect, how to prepare ourselves for risks and, importantly, what action we need to take.

Here are some of our favourite resources for taking the hot air out of climate change - from demystifying the science, to keeping up to date with cultural, technological, economic and political changes.

The basics

Ever felt confused about what climate change actually is and what its impacts are? You are not alone.

Climate science is a super-complex business, but the basic things you need to know to understand the climate crisis aren't very hard. UCL Professor Mark Maslin has a great, simple overview if you want the basic science.

NASA Vital Signs and the Royal Society also provide really straightforward and reliable starting points for getting up on the facts.

Keeping up to date

Along with the basics, there is a constant roll out of new research and news on climate change, extending our understanding of what it is, what it means for different people across the globe, and how we are going to get it under control. It’s great that climate change seems only to be shooting up the public agenda, but with dozens of new news stories per week, it can be hard to keep up. Thankfully some hardworking journalists have made it their mission to make it easier for us.

  1. Carbon Brief does a brilliant useful round up of the day’s energy and climate change news delivered straight to your inbox. Sign up via their website (which is always worth a read for in-depth climate news too).

  2. For an international perspective with especially good coverage of the UN climate talks, check out Climate Home News.

  3. Greenpeace Unearthed is another fantastic resource which saves you from having to leave the comfort of your emails. Expect a thoughtfully curated and easily digestible daily summary of  the news concerning climate and environment.

  4. Promising “Nature for nerds” Earther offers tight, sometimes irreverent takes on the latest environment news.

  5. Tonnes of other news outlets are upping the anti on climate change coverage - take a look at the Covering Climate Now partners for some pointers.
