100 companies help staff go flight-free for the climate.
We know that the UK needs to reduce flights or we simply won’t reach its climate targets.
But one of our biggest hurdles is time. Life moves fast, and with limited days off work, many of us opt for the fastest routes without even thinking about it. Whilst travelling overland has huge benefits beyond slashing your carbon emissions (you can see more, take more luggage, and reach your destination without the queues and stress of airports or transfers), it is rarely the fastest option.
At Possible, we wanted to help more people overcome this hurdle, and enjoy slower, cleaner travel. So back in 2019, we launched Climate Perks: an employee benefit scheme that gives workers paid ‘journey days’ on top of annual leave if they choose to get to their holiday destination by land or sea instead of getting on a plane.
Today we’ve hit an important milestone - over 100 organisations have signed up to Climate Perks, and are now offering paid ‘journey days’ to staff who choose flight-free travel. Employers who have signed up include architects, accountants, legal firms, NGOs, the government’s own climate advisors, and more. By working with these 100 employers, we’ve unlocked climate-friendly travel for over 5,500 workers, from a range of industries, across the UK and beyond.
It’s working.
We’re excited by how much Climate Perks is kicking off, and about the positive feedback we’re getting from our founding members and their staff. For the employers, Climate Perks is a low-cost way to demonstrate climate leadership and to retain and recruit a motivated team. And for staff, working for a Climate Perks employer means you can choose clean travel without losing out on hard-earned leisure time.
What now?
Thanks to grant funding, we’ve been able to trial and test our Climate Perks concept without charging member employers a penny. Instead, in exchange for our policy, accreditation stamp, resources, and 1-1 support, our founding members have given vital feedback on if/how the scheme is being used in their workplaces, and how we maximise our impact.
Today, as we celebrate hitting the 100 member milestone, we’re proud to launch new paid membership options as a way to generate income and move us towards financial sustainability. Our goal remains the same: to empower as many people as possible to choose flight-free travel. As such, we’ll still have a free version of Climate Perks for organisations that don’t have the means to become paying members - or aren’t ready to do so yet. But employers who pay for membership can enjoy a number of exclusive benefits including access to discounts, events, an online portal to book flight-free travel, personalised impact reports, and 1-1 support for their whole staff team.
Three ways you can help us grow Climate Perks:
Email your employer about Climate Perks.
Click the button below if you’d like us to send a template email to your work email address which you can forward straight to your employer, listing the benefits of Climate Perks and how they can sign up.
2. Tell your friends and family about Climate Perks.
To make paid ‘journey days’ an expected part of employee benefit packages, we need more people to know that this is an option. Will you help spread the word by sharing our short animation with your friends and family?
3. Donate to Possible.
Regular donations give us the financial stability and security to build meaningful long term campaigns and reach the areas where climate action is needed most.
