“Being Active isn’t just Physical”- Gem Turner

I’m Gem and I’m a disabled blogger and consultant from West Yorkshire. I, like many others, am shielding at the moment but before lockdown I was a very sociable person. I am a massive extrovert who will ask you your pets’ names and what their personality is like because I’m that person that is genuinely interested. As you can imagine, I’m very much looking forward to reuniting with my pals! Pre-lockdown I pretty much relied on public transport to get from A-B whether that was for work or socialising with friends in Leeds. Not being able to drive meant that trains and buses were something I had to get used to. There’s something really empowering about being able to roll onto a bus and being able to get to your destination independently, especially as a wheelchair user. There are still many barriers for disabled people using public transport that I like to share and speak about - but when it goes right it’s so liberating.

That’s why I support this campaign as I believe “active travel” isn’t just about physically being active. This also can be being mindful and making decisions for the better of not just the environment but the people around us too. Whether that’s deciding how you travel or what causes you support. I know as someone who has made a career out of being vocal online - sharing your opinions on social media can be powerful, sending letters to your MP works and any participation is valid.

As someone shielding at the moment I’m extra cautious of making sure I'm as safe as possible and maintaining my health. I’m not really sure when I will be out and about again as I’ve been advised to still shield for now. I’ll admit it’s going to be a new experience trying to social distance when I do eventually go out in these new times as a wheelchair user. Being physically lower than everyone else most times, not being able to tuck into a wall as someone walks by and trying to navigate crowds can be difficult - so I really hope we can support this campaign and try and think of others when we’re making decisions about travel moving into this new phase. Hopefully soon enough I’ll be rolling onto a train, travelling to Leeds and continuing working through this new normal - whatever that may look like!
