We've written to the main broadcasters to ask a simple question

We’re one of a group of environmental organisations who have written to the main broadcasters to ask them to commit to giving the climate the coverage it deserves in this election.

It’s a top five issue for the public, but you wouldn’t think it when you listen to our party leaders. We need our leading broadcasters to get the campaigns away from gaffes and infighting and onto the real issues. Climate solutions can bring down bills, bring up quality of life and bring the country together - so let’s have a conversation about it.

This is what we wrote to BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky News and Global:

For the attention of UK broadcasters,

We are in a nature and climate crisis.

This is an issue of real concern to voters, consistently polling within the top five issues the electorate cares about. Yet thus far, climate and nature have hardly featured in this election campaign. We believe this issue should be central to coverage of this general election, as an issue your audiences care deeply about.

As a coalition of UK organisations working on climate, nature and the environment, we are calling on the country’s leading broadcasters to commit to giving these issues the prominence and treatment they deserve during the course of this election campaign.

Climate and nature are deeply intertwined with other key issues. Energy costs have been spiking owing to volatility in the prices of fossil fuels. Farmers are struggling to retain viable businesses because of extreme weather and a policy framework which doesn’t support them. Clean air, clean water and access to nature are all vital for our health. The cost of living crisis is tied to the climate crisis, and the solutions are also linked.

Support for climate action remains overwhelmingly high among all demographics of the UK public. As broadcasters we believe you have a duty to ensure that general election coverage reflects the public’s desire to see strong and serious leadership on climate and nature recovery - and a genuine debate about the solutions.

We ask you to make a commitment to ensure that the main parties’ plans to meet our legal climate and nature targets are properly examined during the course of this campaign and communicated to the public.

We would be pleased to meet to discuss this further.

 Yours,

Possible
